When extreme temperatures arrive in the Columbia River Gorge region, the houseless community and other vulnerable community members face extreme risk to their health and well-being from exposure to unhealthy conditions that create life-threatening situations. Mid-Columbia Community Action Council is partnering with Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) and other agencies and nonprofits to keep the list below updated so community members know where they should go to get relief during extreme weather conditions.

Shelter & Outreach Resources in Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, and Klickitat Counties

Shelter for Hood River County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council is partnering with Hood River Shelter Services to operate the 24-bed, non-congregate winter seasonal shelter at 1733 Oak St. in Hood River for the 2022-2023 winter season. The shelter is typically open mid-November through mid-March yearly and is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Shelter for Wasco and Sherman County Residents

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council’s non-congregate shelter site in The Dalles is open year-round and has 34 beds. It is located at the corner of Bargeway and Terminal Avenue. For more information about available shelter beds or other emergency lodging resources MCCAC can provide to Wasco and Sherman County residents during severe winter weather events, fill out a shelter intake form here or call (541) 980-0855. 

Additionally, people in need of a warm or dry place to stay during the daytime or who need a free meal should go to St. Vincent de Paul 315 W. 3rd St. in The Dalles. Their community room is open to all on a drop-in basis between 9am-12pm and 1pm-4:30pm Monday-Thursday and between 9am-12pm and 12pm-1:30pm Friday.

Street Outreach Resources in Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman Counties

In addition to shelter and emergency lodging services, MCCAC and its partners provide street outreach services and supplies to Hood River, Wasco, and Sherman County residents as we work to ensure unsheltered community members can stay warm through these tough winter months. Street outreach staff also help provide direct referrals to sheltering and other relevant resources during severe winter weather events. For more information about street outreach supplies and services MCCAC staff can provide between 9am-5pm, fill out the intake form here or call (541) 298-5131, extension 200. MCCAC generally has warming supplies such as blankets and hand warmers at our office in The Dalles (The Gloria Center 2505 W 7th St.) and our shelter in Hood River (1733 Oak St.). These supplies can be picked up at either location on a drop-in basis between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday.

Warming Shelter for Skamania County

Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) operates a warming shelter for overnight relief from dangerous winter weather conditions. The Warming Shelter is located in Stevenson near the Hegewald Center and is now open Thursday - Monday nights with arrival between 6pm and 8pm for check-in. For more information and other warming resources, please call the Stevenson office at 509-427-8229 Monday- Thursday 9am-5pm. Afterhours support is available by calling 509-281-1129. The shelter is projected to operate through this season’s winter months until mid-March 2023. Seasonal Shelters for Klickitat County

Persons seeking shelter and other warming resources in Klickitat County can call WAGAP offices for support. In Goldendale and eastern Klickitat County call 509-773-6834 Monday – Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-1pm. In Bingen/White Salmon and western Klickitat County call 509-493-2662 Monday - Thursday 9am-5pm. More information about this and other seasonal shelters in the Mid-Columbia River region can be found on WAGAP’s website: www.wagap.org.

Transportation Options

For those who need transportation to access a shelter, information about public transit schedules, routes, and dial-a-ride options in the Mid-Columbia region can be found here. Hood River and Wasco County residents who are enrolled in PacificSource insurance through the Oregon Health Plan in are eligible for a free ride to a shelter using Non-Emergent Medical Transportation and can call (855) 397-3617 for more information about this service. Sherman County residents enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan can call (877) 875-4657 to schedule a free ride to a shelter. Medicaid recipients in Skamania and Klickitat Counties who need to schedule a ride to a shelter can call the Medicaid Transportation Broker at (800) 752-9422.
